Hosted by Twinkle Hockey Club, the festival goes beyond the pitch, serving as an awareness campaign for breast and prostate cancer.
According to club president Desmond Boi, the inspiration for the event came from a desire to combine hockey’s unifying power with the urgent need to address health challenges facing society.
"As a club, we recognized that hockey could be more than competition, it could be a platform to raise awareness, bring communities together, and inspire positive change,” said Boi.
The inaugural edition was held in 2023 at Parklands Sports Club in Nairobi, and since then the festival has grown in size, reputation, and influence.
It has attracted both local and international teams, corporate partners, and recognition within the global hockey community.

This year’s focus on breast and prostate cancer awareness is deeply personal for many.
“Almost everyone knows a loved one, colleague, or neighbour who has been affected,” explained Boi.
“We chose this cause because it resonates with our players, our fans, and society at large. Through the Festival, we aim to demystify cancer, promote early detection, and encourage open conversations about prevention and treatment,” remarked Boi.
Bigger and better in 2025
The 2025 edition promises more action and engagement both on and off the pitch.
Fans can expect high-intensity matches featuring established stars and emerging talents, with camaraderie and competition blending seamlessly.
Away from the game, the festival will also host health talks, free cancer screenings, exhibitions, merchandise stalls, music, and entertainment — ensuring it is not just a hockey showcase but a holistic family and community experience.
Founded just two and a half years ago, Twinkle Hockey Club has already established itself as a force in Kenyan women’s hockey.
Competing in the Kenya Hockey Union Premier League, the club has also nurtured players who have gone on to represent Kenya internationally.
“Our vision has always been to be a trailblazer in women’s hockey in Kenya and to use sport as a platform for youth empowerment, discipline, and excellence,” noted Boi.

Beyond competition, Twinkle has made inclusivity, mentorship, and community development central to its mission.
Boi’s ambitions for both the festival and the club are clear.
He envisions the Nyota Festival growing into a premier continental event, a fixture on the African sports calendar that blends hockey excellence with social advocacy.
For Twinkle Hockey Club, the future lies in becoming a sustainable, professional institution synonymous with excellence, community impact, and transformation through sport.
“Our dream is to build a legacy where the name Twinkle stands for more than hockey. It should stand for giving back, creating opportunities, and leaving a mark," added Boi.
